Number of cross-border commuters rises again

Most frontier workers work in the Geneva region. But also in Basel and Ticino thousands of people cross the border daily to work in Switzerland.

We can observe that the number of cross-border workers continues to rise by more than double in comparison to the working-age population. However, the growth has weakened since the record years 2011 and 2013.

When we started the preparations for ExchangeMarket, the last statistics of the FSO (Federal Statistical Office) showed a total of just over 250,000 cross-border commuters. Now we are pleased that in the last years this target group has grown by more than 25%.

More than half of cross-border workers live in France. Only about a quarter of all commuters come from Germany and Italy. Above all, an above-average increase was recorded around Lake Geneva. However, in Ticino the number of cross-border workers is relatively the highest when compared to the working population. Already every fourth position is occupied by cross-border employees.

At ExchangeMarket, we notice that more and more frontier workers are interested in a better exchange rate. The number of newly registered customers increases from month to month. A good euro-franc exchange rate allows you to save considerable sums over a longer period of time.
